Virgin Coconut oil is a functional food. A functional food is a food that not only provides nutrients but also functions in health promotion and disease prevention. Adding coconut oil to the diet has some compelling health benefits.
The primary health benefits of coconut oil are due to the presence of lauric acid. There is very little lauric acid in the modern diet. By including coconut oil in the diet, we have a source of this valuable nutrient.
Immune benefits: Lauric acid is transformed into monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin has antimicrobial properties and is active against viruses. Monolaurin has also been shown to have some anti cancer effects.
Heart Healthy Benefits: Coconut oil, like other healthy oils can shift the ratio of goood HDL cholesterol to the sticky plaque forming LDL cholesterol, thus lowering the formation of plaque in the arteries and lowering the risk of stroke and heart attack.
The standard American diet (SAD) is filled with unhealthy fats, particularly trans fats. In moving to a healthier diet, healthier fats and oils should be included. By shifting the type of fats and oils in the diet we can change our body composition. With the inclusion of healthy oils in the diet , such as virgin coconut oil, we can become more lean and less fat. Changing our body composition in this way reduces the risk of many diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
Coconut oil is excellent for cooking as it can tolerate high temperatures.
As a food source use only virgin, unprocessed, non-hydrogenated coconut oil to get the health benefits of coconut oil.
