Tips for a Healthy Cancer Free Digestive Tract

Colon cancer (cancer of the large intestine) is one of the most common and most preventable cancers. Because the lower part of the intestines, the colon and the rectum are the waste disposal depot, the lining of the large intestine is exposed to many potential cancer causing chemicals every day.

Did you know that when food is passing through your digestive tract from your starting with your mouth at the top and your rectum at the bottom that it’s not really considered to be INSIDE your body? It’s like the hole in the middle of a doughnut!! Really! (I do hope NONE of you are eating donuts!)

The surface of your entire digestive tract comes in contact with everything you eat and drink. This is the reason that colon cancer is so common today, because we are exposed to so many chemicals, artificial flavorings, coloring’s, genetically modified and engineered foods that just are not part of the natural ecology of your gut. Furthermore your genetics, the absorptive surfaces of your digestive tract and the unique immune system found in your digestive tract developed long before all of these chemicals were part of our environment, our foods and drinks (and medicines).

One of the most powerful things you can do to promote a healthy gut is to include fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kim chi, miso and traditionally cured olives in your diet. The friendly healthy bacteria found in these natural foods promote normal immunity, reduce inflammation, promote detoxification and even influence your mood and your hormones. If you don’t eat fermented foods as a part of your diet, then I highly recommend you take a high quality probiotic supplement on a daily basis in capsule or powder form. The most important friendly bacteria are in the acidophilus and bifidus family. It is a good idea to get a diverse and broad spectrum of healthy bacteria to promote normal immunity in the gut.
