Gratitude and Meaning.
I received this message from a patient who went through a very challenging and stressful course of treatment with chemotherapy and radiation. Here is what he had to say now that he is “cancer free” (no evidence of disease).
“There are no words to say THANK YOU to equal how I feel about all the great things you have done for me and my family. I have never experienced a more dedicated and loving professional than you.”
This is what makes it all worth it. I find such deep meaning in knowing I have made a difference.
This is also a beautiful example of gratitude, which reminds me of a quote from Wayne Dwyer that I included in my book, 32 Ways to OutSmart Cancer: How to Create A Body Where Cancer Cannot Thrive.
“…Serotonin is a naturally occurring substance in the body that makes us feel more comfortable, peaceful, and even blissful. Research has shown that a simple act of kindness directed toward another improves functioning of the immune system and stimulates production of serotonin in both the recipient of kindness and the person extending the kindness. Even more amazing is that persons observing the act of kindness have similar beneficial results.”
So, for cancer prevention and a robust immune system, as well as spreading joy and warmth and well being to others, make it a practice to engage in a simple act of kindness at least once every day.
Let me make it a bit more challenging for you…extend kindness to a stranger or to someone for whom it is not your habit to do so every day, such as the grocery store clerk or a parking attendant or a bank teller.
I challenge you to stretch yourself to be more openhearted and generous. After all, it’s good for your health!
