There is a new breed of clinicians practicing Integrative Cancer Care who are skilled in promoting and supporting the restoration of health and well being to cancer patients and cancer survivors. An “Integrative” approach to cancer is emerging. This includes not only the focus on the disease but also highly individualized care that supports healthy function. Integrative Cancer Care is a team approach combining the best of conventional medical treatments with alternative and complementary treatments. This combines a disease model with a health model. Currently oncologists (cancer specialists) do not assist their patients in returning to health. Oncologists are disease specialists not health specialists.
In search of “health” oriented care, cancer patients commonly use Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) along with their conventional cancer treatments. According to the US National Institute of Health 2010 Annual Report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine
About 40 percent of cancer survivors reported using CAM….According to the 2007 NHIS, more than one-third of adults (about 38 percent) had used some form of CAM. Cancer patients seek guidance on diet and nutrition, botanical and nutritional medicine, acupuncture, stress management and meditation. (1)
